Tuesday began with a shock as Lingfield passed it’s early morning inspection. It wasn’t to be the only shock of the day. Looking back it is to great credit that the clerk of the course Neil Mackenzie Ross decided that racing was to go ahead. It was complimented by the jockeys later on, described as ‘very wet ground’ but ground you can get through – ‘perfect jumping ground’. The seven race-card began with a 25/1 winner, the Seamus Mullins-trained Alder Mairi, who stayed on better than the 4/9 favourite Hidden Identity. Things did, however get better for punters as Topaze Collonges gamely held his rivals in the next to kick start a double for Charlie Longsdon.
Sire De Grugy was undoubtedly the highlight of the day. Ridden out a one and three quarter victor under Jamie Moore for father Gary Moore over Cantlow and the champion jockey. It was a performance that franked Captain Conan’s Grade 2 Cheltenham success just nine days ago. The six-year-old worked his way into the race having been a tad keen early on whilst lacking fluency over his fences. Jamie Moore coasted him to a comfortable success despite his 7lb penalty for winning at Kempton.
