UK Horse Racing Form – Lingfield, Stratford, Clonmel, Hereford and Kempton – Thursday 1 November 201

Horse Racing - Australia

Five-time King George champ Kauto Star was retired yesterday by trainer-Paul Nicholls. Paul described it as “The end of an era” and Clive Smith explained how it was no ‘easy’ decision. Nicholls described on his Betfair column yesterday how after a superb nine-years with the horse, his work the past few weeks gave all the signs that retirement was the right option to take. Both trainer and owner felt he had “done enough”. Kauto Star is signing off in full health and after a season in which he proved so many people wrong, includng us, by winning a fifth King George and a fourth Betfair Chase, to add to his two Cheltenham Gold Cups and Tingle Creeks. The horse has consistently proved himself a class apart, since winning on debut for Paul Nicholls back in December, 2004. He has come a long way since then, winning the £1m Betfair Million Bonus in 2007 and 16 Grade 1′s later, he has definitely earned his retirement. We will always remember Kauto Star, and are proud to say we witnessed his final victory in the King George, in December 2011. The cheer of the crowd as he crossed the line victorious that day will live long in our memories, as will Kauto in many of yours.
