UK Horse Racing Form – Newbury, Newmarket, Ayr, Catterick, Listowel and Wolverhampton – Saturday 22

Horse Racing - Australia

The Ayr Western Meeting was abandoned on Thursday after heavy rain overnight on Wednesday. The course was waterlogged an fear began to grow regarding the Gold Cup meeting on Saturday. Thankfully, it passed its morning inspection yesterday and racing went ahead. With no further rain forecasted the Ayr Gold Cup looked sure to go ahead. Although, it got punters focusing on those horses proven in testing conditions. Todays selection MAAREK is one of these. A horse with an obvious love for mud, he has won on heavy ground twice in his career, with the bulk of his best form coming on testing to soft ground. When the ground gets really testing at Ayr, its well-known that those drawn low to middle get the run of the race. MAAREK and the well-backed Our Jonathan fulfil these placings – first and fourth in this race last year. MAAREK, however, has improved leaps and bounds since then and has shown no signs of tiredness when recording a career best in Group 3 company in the mud at the Curragh. He does burden a 5lb penalty for that romp but has Mark Enright on board today, an apprentice who negates 5lb. The form says it all, winning four of his last six races, even powering into sixth in the Wokingham when the ground had seemingly dried out. MAAREK does have top weight to carry through the mud but he looks the type who has a big sprint handicap in him and couldn’t be in better form in ground where he’s at home.
