UK Horse Racing Form – Warwick, Bangor-on-Dee, Southwell and Wolverhampton – Thursday 4 October 2012

Horse Racing - Australia

There was a sense of relief today as Aidan O’Brien confirmed Camelot for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, with Snow Fairy, Danedream and Nathaniel all ruled out in the space of four days. With Joseph O’Brien unable to make the weight to ride the Derby double victor, the people’s favourite, Frankie Dettori was confirmed today to take the ride by Ballydoyle. This news understandably came as a positive to many of you on twitter, with punters blaming his failed triple crown bid on young Joseph O’Brien’s shoulders. What we do know is that Camelot lost nothing in defeat that day to Encke who showed a real determination to win the race. Conditions are likely to suit better in Longchamp with the added plus of him being dropped back to his optimum trip. These factors combined with Frankie’s knowledge and enthusiasm for the game has to tick a lot of boxes. He has been supported into 3/1 co-favourite with the Japanese raider Orfevre. It will be Frankie’s first ride for O’Brien since he rode Scorpion to win the St Leger back in 2005. It was a ride that caused much controversy. Dettori was excused an important ride for the ‘Royal Blues’ at Goodwood to ride Motivator in the Irish Champion Stakes, but when Motivator was confirmed as a non runner instead of heading to Goodwood and riding for Godolphin, Dettori took the ride for their arch-rivals on Scorpion at Doncaster. Thankfully, Godolphin’s only runner in the Arc, Masterstroke, will be ridden by Mickael Barzalona. From Coolmore’s point of view it is easy to see why they went for Dettori. It will be Frankie’s twenty-fifth time riding in this race, giving him more Arc experience than any French jockey. He has won the race three times along the way and remains at the top of his game. Imperial Monarch was also confirmed a late non-runner by Ballydoyle yesterday.
