With the weather again playing havoc it was left to Navan to save the day for punters. It was a tremendous effort by the ground-staff to pass the early morning inspection given the amount of rainfall we’ve had over the past couple of days. The going was obviously heavy and it was going to be a real stamina test for the horses. A test that Gordon Elliott’s Don Cossack relished, cruising to a nine and a half length success under Davy Russell. The five-year-old was unbeaten in three bumpers last season and made a tremendous debut victory over jumps to Gordon Elliott’s delight. Davy Russell was able to ease the Gigginstown House-owned gelding in the final strides as he won on the bridle despite the gruelling conditions. The bookmakers reacted positively to his ruthless victory, slashing him from 12’s to 9/1 for the Supreme Novices’ at Cheltenham.
The Supreme Novices’ is always a tough race to win and it is rapidly developing into a field strong in depth. It was hard not to be impressed by Don Cossack performance today but we’re not entirely convinced we have seen the Cheltenham festival victor. Looking forward to seeing The New One in the next couple of weeks as well as My Tent Or Yours, both around the 20/1 mark at the moment.
