UK Horse Racing Form – Navan – Sunday 25 November 2012

Horse Racing - Australia

It was disappointment again for fans of the Nicky Henderson-trained Long Run as the Paul Nicholls-trained Silviniaco Conti emerged a victor and a serious prospect for the Gold Cup at Cheltenham in March. It was a terrific ride by Ruby Walsh who made no mistake in taking the six-year-old to the front early on to make all. Following his scintillating reappearance win at Wetherby just three weeks ago, Silviniaco Conti came to Haydock race-fit. The Kauto Star-stablemate was slick over his fences and made no mistake once shaken up two out. Ruby Walsh drove him out to the line with Sam Waley-Cohen labouring back in second. Long Run found it difficult in the ground and will no doubt come on from that reappearance run, but you have to have your concerns over the Gold Cup victor. Some people on twitter felt the need to blame the performance again down to the amateur jockey on board. Maybe he left him too much to do in the ground, given Long Run isn’t known for his slick turn of foot. However, he had every chance to make up the ground and the reality is he was beaten by a better horse on the day. It was apparent from the off Weird Al wasn’t travelling at all well and it’s of great credit that he stayed on how he did. The Donald McCain-trained nine-year-old finished a seven-length fourth under Jason Maguire. The Giant Bolster again ran a big race but again looked held.
