A-League 2017/18 – Round 24

A-League - Football - Australia

Best Value

Perth – Draw No Bet – $2.88

Very keen on this bet, think Perth is great value Head to Head, but with the safety of money back for a draw, $2.88 is great shopping. We all know how good Perth is at home, I generally ignore their form away, and if you do that they’ve won their last three matches. It’s an extremely tough road trip for the away side too, so everything points to Perth.

Next Best Value

Newcastle – Head to Head – $3.10

Newcastle are the second best team in the league, I can’t believe they’re not favourite against Adelaide, who are average at best. I know it’s away, but Newcastle should be winning this and are a great price at $3.00+.

1st:       Perth – Draw No Bet – $2.88

2nd:       Newcastle – Head to Head – $3.10

3rd:       Wellington – Draw No Bet – $2.55

4th:       Melbourne City – Head to Head – $2.12

Adelaide United v Newcastle Jets

Friday 23 March, 7:50pm (AEDT) – Hindmarsh Stadium

Round 24 kicks off on Friday night with Adelaide and Newcastle going at it at Hindmarsh Stadium in what should be a cracking match. Adelaide hosted Melbourne City last week and after taking a 1-0 lead half way through the match things were looking good for them. Unfortunately within 10 minutes Melbourne City leveled things up at 1-1. From that point on neither team could break the deadlock, so they had to settle for a point each. Newcastle got the three points when they travelled across the ditch to New Zealand to take on Wellington. Wellington managed to fire off a heap of shots throughout the game, but the keeper wasn’t tested all that much. On the other hand from minimal shots Newcastle were a lot more accurate, and managed to bury one of their chances, giving them the 1-0 victory. I think Newcastle will continue on their winning way with another win as they slightly cut back the lead Sydney has on them at the top of table. Very keen on Newcastle at the price too, either the Head to Head or Draw No Bet markets it doesn’t matter, they’re both great value.

Central Coast Mariners v Sydney FC

Saturday 24 March, 5:35pm (AEDT) – Bluetongue Stadium

Central Coast has their work cut out of them on Saturday when they host Sydney this week. On Sunday Central Coast showed very little on their trip down south to take on Melbourne Victory. They were owned all over the pitch, and with the game nearly over they were 5-0 down. As Melbourne Victory went to sleep with the game all over Central Coast pulled back two goals, but that means little to nothing, they were extremely poor. Sydney surprised everyone when they lost 2-1 at home to Brisbane. It was the first 20 minutes that did Sydney in; some sloppy defense left them 2-0 very early in the game. They pulled a goal back in the second half, but that wasn’t enough. Sydney will be keen to make amends after dropping all three points last week and should give Central Coast an easy beating. Prices all look spot on, so no play there, happy with the $2.40 for Under 2.5 Goals though. Central Coast won’t score, and hopefully Sydney only net one or two.

Melbourne City v Western Sydney Wanderers

Saturday 24 March, 7:00pm (AEDT) – AAMI Park

Melbourne City will be doing everything possible to get the win when they host Western Sydney on Saturday night, it’s now been a month since they’ve won a match, dropping them right away from the top two on the table. Last week they were playing away to Adelaide, and while it was a very winnable match for them, it was always going to be a tight contest. After ninety minutes all they could manage was a 1-1 draw, which I’m sure they’ll take, but they wouldn’t be too impressed with their effort. A top two spot is now looking out of their reach, but the fight for third is still on so they need this win. Western Sydney has had a bit of a break with their Round 23 match against Perth being played Sunday two weeks ago. It was a match that they really should have been winning and even though they took an early 1-0 lead, they couldn’t maintain it and ended up only coming away with a draw. After their run of outs this match has Melbourne City written all over it, I don’t think they’ve got any excuse to lose here. They’re value too at the $2.12 as I rated them a $1.89 chance.

Wellington Phoenix v Brisbane Roar

Sunday 25 March, 5:00pm (AEDT) – Westpac Stadium

Wellington host Brisbane on Sunday over at Westpac Stadium. Wellington lost 1-0 to Newcastle last week, and even though they were at home, I don’t think it was the worst effort. Newcastle is clearly the second best team in the league, so a 1-0 loss to them is almost commendable. That being said, they really need to start getting some results from their games as they’re still on the bottom of the table. Brisbane had the performance on Round 23 when they played Sydney away, and came away with an impressive 2-1 win. I gave them little to no chance to be honest, but they proved me, and many others wrong. They took an early 2-0 lead, which is what got them over the line in the end. Sydney came back with one goal, but that’s all they managed thanks to Brisbane’s solid defense. That win proves that they should be playing finals football, but they need to make sure they perform like that for the rest of the regular season. Tough tough game, I’m leaning to Wellington because of the home ground advantage. Market has Brisbane as favourite which is a little surprising; means I’ve got to be on Wellington’s side, think the Draw No Bet market is the safer option though.

Perth Glory v Melbourne Victory

Sunday 25 March, 7:00pm (AEDT) – NIB Stadium

Last game of the round is Perth, who is coming off a week’s break, against Melbourne Victory. Two weeks ago Perth played Western Sydney on the road, and they put in a fairly decent effort. They’re never been a road team, but they pulled out a 1-1 draw, which I’m sure they’ll take. They’re a couple games out of a finals spot, but with three of their last four games being played at home, they’ve still got a sniff of making it. Melbourne Victory made an absolute mess of Central Coast on Sunday, they should of won the match 5-0, but they shut off in the last 10 minutes and allowed a couple of late goals in. Still, it was as impressive a performance as you’ll see in the A-League, granted against a pretty weak side. I think this is Perth’s game to lose, they’re so good at home, and with the weeks break they’ll be ready to fire. Very happy to take them at the current quote too, especially the $2.88 in the Draw No Bet market, it looks the best value all the weekend.

I’ve always been a massive soccer fan, starting with Manchester United in my early days (still love the Red Devils). While I followed the old NSL a little, I really got into Australian soccer once the A-League had been up and going for a couple of years. I’m amazed how it gets bigger and better every year and I’m excited to see where it will go in the future. I also have a keen interest in gambling and trying to use statistics to find an edge that others can’t. As soon as TheProfits asked if I would be interested in writing A-League for them I jumped at the opportunity. I hope that I can pass on some of my knowledge on both soccer and gambling to others, and I always appreciate any feedback or advice, I know that I’ve always got plenty to learn too. And most importantly, I hope I can help others win some cash and send those bookies broke.
