2016 Champions League Final

champions league

The pinnacle of club football reaches its climax this weekend when two fierce rivals face off for the 2nd time in a Champions League final in 3 years. The last time these two met it was a typically tight affair and with Atletico just minutes away from claiming the win a 90th minute equaliser from Sergio Ramos turned the game. History tells us that Real Madrid won the game in extra time 4-1 but Atletico will be hungry to avenge that loss. Let alone the rivalry between these two, this will be a fantastic contest.

**Odds from Sportsbet as at 27th May

Real Madrid ($2.6) versus Atletico Madrid ($3), Draw ($3.1)

Real Madrid haven’t had the most convincing of seasons even if they only finished a point behind Barcelona in the La Liga title race. One thing they have maintained though is their scoring output with 110 goals scored in the league this season. For all their scoring ability though, they’ll find a brick wall in what is one of the best defences in European football. In the league they’ve only conceded 18 times, almost half what Real Madrid have (34) albeit that they have also scored just over half of what Real Madrid have. But it paints a picture of how this game will go and it’s likely it will go the same way it did in normal time the last time they met in the Champions League final in 2014. Atletico won’t give an inch and that’s been shown in their last 11 meetings against them since that Champions League final loss in 2014. In all competitions they’ve lost just the once to Real Madrid with 7 of those recording under 2.5 goal results. Given the tense nature of such a game like this, a similar result looks likely at least in normal time and it may just be a question of who is going to take their chances. Maybe, just maybe, this is Atletico’s chance to shine and it’s somewhat hard to argue with them taking their chances when they came through to the final at the expense of Barcelona and Bayern Munich. They’ve beaten the two other best sides in Europe and on a good run against they’re rivals I’m going to give them the win here.

Predicted score: Atletico Madrid 1-0

Best Bet: Half-Time Draw at $1.91 (80%)

Next Best: Under 2.5 goals at $1.53

Value: Half-Time correct score 0-0 at $2.52

As an Australian growing up AFL was always my no.1 sport especially given I was lucky enough to grow up a few blocks from Carlton’s home ground, Princes Park, where I was lucky enough to attend many games. That’s where my passion for sport began but it was until the early 2000’s when I discovered a real passion for football with the Socceroos 2002 World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay accelerating my football journey. From there I began to follow the Premier League and haven’t looked back since. These days I’m a massive Tottenham fan where I’ve enjoyed many sleepless nights religiously watching them without missing a game despite many roller coaster feelings. There’s just something magical and glamorous when you watch the EPL and knowing the Profits owners Drew and Euan through studies, I’m now lucky enough to be able to share my thoughts on each game each week of the season.
