UK Horse Racing Form – Catterick, Ascot, Cheltenham, Kelso, Cork and Wolverhampton – Saturday 20 Oct

Horse Racing - Australia

It’s hard to believe how quickly the last two years have gone and quite how privileged we have been to witness the ‘greatest’ horse in history. Frankel has raced right under our noses, and we have experienced his remarkable thirteen-race unbeaten run every step of the way. Today he faces his stiffest test to date, and most probably, his last. The Khalid-Abdulla owned four-year-old races in the 4.05 at Ascot in the Qipco Champions Stakes, where five horses are to take their chance at spoiling the party. Noticeably Cirrus Des Aigles, a top-class performer in his own right, takes his chance under Olivier Peslier. A beast in the mud, this Jean-Claude-Alain Dupouy-owned six-year-old is likely to push Frankel all the way. The going has been reported as Soft, Heavy in places after 6mm of rain overnight. On the plus side, no more rain is forecasted today and there is a drying breeze. The ground has been reported ‘Safe’, although heavy in the first couple of furlongs. With a 38,000 sell-out Frankel must run, and prove to the world, if he hasn’t already, just how brilliant he is. Nathaniel is of course the other proven Group One horse in the field, and looks massively overpriced at 14/1 for a place. These two have not met since their debut European Breeders Fund Maiden Stakes debuts some 798-days ago where Frankel was victorious by half-a-length – a distance that remains the closest any one horse has come to the unbeaten-champion.
