UK Horse Racing Form – Curragh, Leicester, Huntingdon and Wolverhampton – Tuesday 16 October 2012

Horse Racing - Australia

Who said racing on a Monday was boring? Richard Hughes made sure it wasn’t your regular slow start to the racing week, equalling Frankie Dettori with a Windsor seven-timer. He became just the second jockey in the history of British racing to ride seven winners on a card. The magnificent seven-timer would have paid around £10,168 for your £1. Hughes produced a scintillating display of riding to dominate the action, winning the first five races. Pivotal Movement, got him off the the perfect start for Richard Hannon, a 13/8 well-backed favourite. It was the same trainer that dominated the next race on the card, as Hughsie rode East Texas Red to a one-and-three-quarter-length victory over Jebril. His biggest test was yet to come as he saddled Embankment in the next. This was a remarkable ride as the horse looked well and truly beat around two furlongs out. A punter next to me actually threw his betting slip to the ground before scrambling to his knees as the King Of Windsor, scrambled the Amanda Perrett-trained three-year-old, home by a neck. It was not to stop there as Magic Secret stormed home in the next, a dominant five-length victory for Jeremy Gask. After the four-timer, people began talking on twitter. What if? Well Links Drive Lady made four into five, under an inspired Richard Hughes. At this stage Hughsie had just the two rides remaining in Ever Fortune and Duke Of Clarence. Despite being backed into favourite, the Rae Guest trained- Ever Fortune could only manage third and the dreams of a seven-timer vanished into thin air. Or did it? Ryan Moore was stood down on his ride in the last on Mama Quilla under ‘Medical confidentiality’ and Richard Hughes would take the ride. The dream of the seven-timer was very much alive, and Hughsie further bolstered his claims by riding Duke Of Clarence to a game-half-a-length victory. It all came down to the last then, and the punters didn’t hang about as support flooded in for Mama Quilla. Despite looking in trouble turning in, Hughes galvanised the three-year-old under another inspired ride, punching the air as he crossed the line to land the famous ‘seven-timer’.
