It was another captivating weekend of racing action as the jump season began to throw up one or two clues for the Cheltenham Festival in March next year. Saturday saw a mouth-watering clash between last season’s Champion Hurdle fifth, Zarkandar, and stablemate Prospect Wells. It was the classier of the two, Zarkandar, who came out on top despite conceeding 17lb to the runner-up effectively appearing weak in the market beforehand. The five-year-old drifted out to as big as 100/30 having not been seen on a course for two-hundred-and-ten days. It was a result that surprised trainer Paul Nicholls, who had made it public that Zarkandar would need the run. It was a thrilling finish to the Grade 2 totepool.com Elite Hurdle as top-weight Zarkandar battled on gamely to see off a strong challenge from stablemate Prospect Wells. It was a 1-2 for trainer Paul Nicholls in this £57,500 contest, the feature race of the weekend at Wincanton. The bookmakers responded positively to Zarkandar’s impressive winning seasonal reappearance, specifically Paddy Power cutting him from 12’s into 10/1 for next year’s Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival.
