Boxing day, potentially the greatest sporting day of the year. There are twelve race meetings around the country and over in Ireland today, with the feature race of the day – the William Hill King George from Kempton Park. The ground will no doubt be heavy and extremely testing, but thankfully there is no need for an inspection.
It was always going to be an intriguing race with Long Run heading the market at a slim 2/1. The conditions have only added to the complexity of the race but even so, it’s tough for us to get away from Cue Card. A horse that is thriving at present and described by trainer Colin Tizzard as “as good as he’s ever been”. To get as close as he did in the Arkle to ‘Super Sacre’ is a credit in it’s own. The doubt today is whether he’ll stay but the Tizzard’s remain confident and so do we. He’s a Champion Bumper winner and his emphatic Haldon Gold Cup victory at Exeter was a memorable one. At 5/1 he represents the clear value on offer. Grand Crus is interesting returning from a wind op but it’s a big ask to take this, he surely won’t be fit enough after a disappointing show in the Paddy Power Gold Cup.
