It was always going to be a real slog around Ascot given the sheer amount of rainfall we have endured over the past week or so. Gordon Elliott’s four-year-old had no qualms with the going, powering up the Ascot straight to break the Irish duck in the Ladbroke. If any horse deserved a handicap this season it was Cause Of Causes. Having gone so close in the Galway Hurdle and third in the Racing Post Hurdle his time was surely near. We couldn’t quite believe his SP when we saw it of 25/1, for a horse of such depth. Gordon Elliott, a trainer who regularly air’s his opinions and rates his horses chances, even admitted he was probably off a ‘favourable’ mark. We have always been fond of the Irish raider and in truth it was a sickener to see him win so readily under Davy Condon, even more so at the price he returned.
Even over the final flight Davy Condon’s mount looked to have plenty to do but relishing the deep ground he seemed to find extra from somewhere, eventually powering away to a four-length convincing success.
